The Basics Of Pruning

By Bambi Coker The technique of pruning varies with the type of rose and the landscape purpose for which it was planted, whether its growing in the ground or in a container. Pruning can range from removing unwanted buds to severely excising canes. Proper pruning stimulates growth at the buds closest to the cut, which produces new flowering stems. The first step in pruning any type of rose is to remove any dead, damaged, diseased, or weak and thin canes, cutting them off flush with the bud union or, in the case of own-root plants, flush with the crown. Look for any canes that are broken or wounded, or that have cankers (dark, sunken lesions caused by a fungus), and prune below the injury, at the highest point where the pith (the central portion of the cane) is healthy and white. Make the cut exactly 1/4 inch above a growth bud. If the injury extends below that point, cut to a lower growth bud. Next, remove canes that are growing into the center of the plant or those that cross each other. Canes that grow inward keep light and air from the center of the plant and will eventually cross, chafing one another. These abrasions can become entry points for insects and diseases. Using shears cut these canes down to their origin, whether that is another cane, the bud union, or the crown. It is important to keep the center of the plant open to let in sunshine and allow air to circulate freely. Always prune to an outward-facing bud so that canes do not grow into the center of the plant. Prune at a distance close enough to the bud that no stub remains to die off and harbor insects or diseases but far enough away that the bud will not die. A good distance is about 1/4 inch above the growth bud. Equally important, cut at the proper angle so that water runoff wont drip on the bud or collect in the cut and retard healing. The ideal angle is 45 degrees, slanted parallel to the direction of bud growth. Pruning in Warm and Cold Climates In warm climates where rose plants grow quite large, pruning to the recommended height is not desirable because it will remove too much of the plant. Instead, prune away about one half to two thirds of the plant each winter or early spring by removing the older canes and shortening the remaining canes. In cold climates where there is a great deal of winter damage, pruning heights may be determined for you by the amount of winterkill. Prune canes down to where there is no more winter damage, even if it is almost to the ground. The higher a plant is pruned, the earlier it will flower. But dont jeopardize the health and vigor of the plant by pruning too high just to have blooms a few clays earlier. There is little advantage to pruning your roses lower than the heights prescribed above; unlike disbudding (which well discuss later); it will probably not make the plants produce larger flowers. Preventing Disease Although black spot and other fungal diseases manifest themselves on leaves, their spores can over-winter on rose canes. If these diseases plagued your roses during the previous summer, you should prune them lower than recommended, cutting away and discarding much of the source of the problem. Although you wont be able to see the spores on the canes, you can be assured that cutting off a few extra inches during spring pruning will reduce the number of spores to some degree. Never leave rose cuttings on the ground. They look unsightly and harbor diseases and pests that may potentially re-infect the plant or spread to others. When to Seal Cuts Pruning cuts more than inch in diameter can be sealed with pruning compound, orange shellac, or grafting wax (available at garden centers or hardware stores) if boring insects are a problem in your area. Pruning compound and orange shellac are the easiest to use because they can be painted on. Otherwise, sealing is not necessary. Some types of white glue, which is sometimes used as a sealant, are water soluble and will wash away with the first rain or watering; they should therefore not be used. Inspect After Pruning Several weeks after you have pruned, take a second trip through the garden with your paining shears. If you pruned early in the year, a late frost may have caused minor dieback on some of the canes. This dieback should be removed. Cankers that were not apparent at pruning time may be visible and should also be pruned away. Dont be too harsh when pruning young plants. Until plants are well established and have been growing robustly for two to three years, remove only weak, damaged, or dead wood. DIY House Moves: Five Ways to Make Sure Your Stuff Stays Intact

By Sharon Hurley Hall With 20 moves in 25 years, Ive learned a thing or two about moving house. Here are five steps you can take to make sure that all your belongings arrive with you. 1. Wrap it up To avoid breakages, wrap your fragile items very carefully. The best packing items are newsprint and bubble wrap. If you can get it, beg or buy large sheets of unprinted newsprint or ends of rolls from your local printer. (When we did this, the roll we got saw us through three moves). If you cant youll have to start saving your Sunday newspapers (the bigger, the better) the minute you put your house on the market. Bubble wrap is also a safe, clean alternative, and if you get bored, you can pop a few bubbles while you wrap. Electrical items are best transported in their own packaging if youve got it, or bubble wrap if you havent. Sharp knives and toasting forks should also be wrapped so no-one gets hurt. All mattresses should be wrapped, otherwise youll be sleeping on dirt for years. Theyre quite heavy, and youll usually drop at least one corner. Black garbage bags and packing tape are useful for wrapping large items such as these, but even better are big dust sheets from your local hardware store. 2. Get stuffed Cups, mugs and glasses should be stuffed inside before being wrapped. That provides an extra layer of protection. Anything with a delicate handle should have that wrapped separately before wrapping the whole item. Lids to milk jugs, sugar bowls and teapots should be wrapped separately. And remember, with wrapping, more is more: the more stuff you put around your stuff, the more likely it is to survive the move intact. I havent lost a cup yet. 3. Space saver Line the bottoms and tops of your crockery boxes, as well as any nooks and crannies with old tea towels. This provides more protection for your breakables and packs the towels as well, and youll have the satisfaction of having killed two birds with one stone. 4. Open spaces OK, there are a lot of items you wont be able to do without, but that doesnt mean you have to leave the packing till the last minute. Pack your canned foods in boxes but dont seal them. That way, you can easily get hold of something you suddenly find you need. 5. Delete the junk When youre moving things out of the loft or basement, use this as an opportunity to clear out anything you havent needed in the last two years. If you dont need it, why move it? The same goes for the garage (does anyone keep a car in there?) and for the garden shed. Be ruthless, or youll end up with backache for nothing and have to throw it away on the other side. It's All About Making People Happy

By Jerry Aragon It was a week-day, and a local morning news show was on television keeping me company as I prepared for work. During a short break in the newscast, the news person, took a few minutes to interview a woman, who was promoting an arts and crafts show that was to be held locally. During the interview, the news person asked the woman several general questions about the upcoming show, and if there would be plenty, of what he called, "Nick-knacks and novelties" at the show. I was appalled when I heard that statement! "How DARE YOU!" I thought to myself! What do you see when you attend an arts and crafts show? You see blood, sweat, and tears; long hours; blisters; rejection slips; failures; frustrations and plenty of sob stories from the people displaying their work! The devotion and dedication these people have put into their work cannot be measured, as they try to be the best in their field! The artists, displaying their work, did not get to this level overnight! There's no magic dust here...no free lunch, either! After they've gotten to this level...with respect to the quality of their work, they then have to find the courage to go out in front of the public and show and/or sell their work. To do this, they have to price their work, which I think is the most difficult thing in the whole process. What is a piece of your work worth to someone? What is the piece worth to you in dollars? How much did you spend to make it? "Nick-knacks and novelties?" How dare you! Bare Walls and Empty Spaces What is one of the first things a person does, when moving into a house, an apartment or an office? Decorating the place is usually someplace at the top of the to-do list. Family photographs; wonderful drawings produced by a child with crayons; a special painting on the wall; that great-looking piece of pottery on the bookcase; a piece of furniture you made yourself; or surrounding yourself with your favorite books...your library! Yes...art, craft and writing pieces can enrich all of our lives! I am a woodcarver, and out of the art and craft world. So, I don't have a writing background whatsoever. But, many years ago, I was invited to join the Southwest Writers Workshop, by the then President of the organization, who was quite accomplished, having published over 5,000 of her articles in some of the top magazines and newspapers in the country. With over 1,000 members nationwide, SWW has some of the most talented and accomplished writers anywhere. Needless to say, I was flattered by the invitation, but at the time, I didn't feel comfortable around writers, etc. As if I didn't have enough rejection slips and bombs in the art and craft world, I had to go out and get more rejection slips in the world of writing! Little by little, I started to wallpaper my wall with rejection slips, and I quickly had a new respect for writers! And, I was upset with myself, as I stuck my nose in the difficult field of writing...I HAD TO BE CRAZY! But without the writer, there would be few or no movies; few or no songs; little or no advertising; no books; no newspapers; only re-runs on television; and there would not be many websites either! So, writers are important in this society and they don't get the credit due. "Nick-knacks and novelties"? How dare you! The following story, is one of my experiences, and shows a little about what artists and craftspeople have to go through, to get their work out before the public, etc. I was participating in a three day show on the plaza in Old Town (Albuquerque, NM). Everything went well for me the first two days as far as sales were concerned. And, on Sunday of the show, it was a quiet afternoon and the plaza was filled with locals and tourists, when all of a sudden and without warning...THE SPRINKLERS CAME ON! You have NOT seen panic, until you see over 100 exhibitors scatter in every direction and tourists and locals do the same! Chaos and madness ruled! All of us got soaked in a matter of seconds! Paintings tumbled to the ground; the sound of pottery and ceramic pieces came crashing down on the sidewalk; and several displays fell over! I quickly put my work in boxes under the tables, and covered them with plastic, and hoped for the best. Later, in checking my work, I didn't lose too much! But, many people lost their shirts that awful day! We all "took a bath," that day, both literally and figuratively! Nick-knacks and novelties?" How dare you? So a lot of this information is not, necessarily, about sawdust; paint; shutter speed; clay; fabric; glass; ceramic or a sheet full of commas and periods...IT'S ALL ABOUT MAKING PEOPLE HAPPY! signals that she will have to do or say something to make
you shift your position so that you turn to face her
completely. When you do this properly in your real life

Moms neighbors were calling him from 850 miles away in Texas to say that she was out watering her roses an hour ago on a cold, early spring morning. John knew that she had been failing. She wasnt the same Mom he could always count to stand by him. Now he needed to stand by her. But how? Families are now living further apart from each other. This is difficult because your elders require ever-increasing assistance, yet the distance between you makes it difficult to perform the tasks of a primary caregiver. But most elders are reluctant to leave their home of many years to move to the town in which their adult children live. This reluctance can become a stressful point of contention between adult children and their parent(s). Often, it is a financial issue. In-home care and assisted living can be much more expensive in New York or California than in the center of the country. Resources simply may not stretch as far to allow one to live as one chooses. Regardless of the reasons, many adult children find themselves far away and concerned that parents are not doing as well as they may insist in those telephone visits. There are some ways to help manage long distance caregiving: * Try to visit as soon as possible to assess the situation. Take notes of possible problem areas and gather information about senior resources in their area. * Make sure legal and financial affairs are in place. Keep copies of important papers and telephone numbers of contacts. * Plan ahead to have back up providers to care for your own family in case you need to make an unexpected visit to your relative. It is also a good idea to bank some vacation or sick days from work for these visits as well. * Seek the assistance of a Professional Care Manager specializing in assessing and monitoring the needs of the elderly. * Consider all the options before moving your relative, but begin talking with them about this possibility. You could be surprised to learn they are willing to move closer to you, but they never mentioned this for fear of burdening you with their problems. * Retain a copy of the Yellow Pages that serves your parent's community. The next time your parent calls and you need to locate resources, you won't need to search out numbers or call information long-distance. When you live hundreds of miles away from an aging loved one, there is a constant level of anxiety over his or her welfare. Every family must make their own decisions about how to handle the situation. I Still Don't Know What I Want to Be When I Grow Up

I was fortunate enough to be born fairly intelligent, and I was a good student. Many years ago, my high school guidance counselor told me You can be anything you want to be. That was not helpful, because I had no idea what I wanted to be when I graduated from high school. I was good at everything I tried to do, but I was not really drawn to anything with any certainty. My parents could not send me to college, so I went through the first 10 years of my adult life working in office jobs and learning to be a secretary. During that time, however, the one thing that I knew was that I wanted to go to college. I finally reached a point when I was able to go to college with the help of grants, scholarships, and student loans. I was a single parent by that time, and it was not easy. I worked all through college and I loved college. That made it all worthwhile. I majored in economics, because I loved the subject and the classes. At some point before I graduated, I decided I wanted to go to law school. I had very good grades and a good LSAT score, and I was accepted at a good law school. One of the most appealing things about the practice of law is that you can work in many different areas of law and at many different kinds of law offices. I worked for a small firm, a big firm, and the federal government. For 10 years, I was a solo practitioner, and I loved everything I did as a lawyer. While I practiced law, I was also involved in business and real estate investments, and I also loved doing that. The Skinny on the Metabolic Syndrome: Cutting the Fat

By Richard Helfant The overweight and obesity epidemic has fueled a dramatic rise in the prevalence of something doctors call the "Metabolic Syndrome"--the combination of abdominal obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and a particularly malignant form of high LDL ("bad") cholesterol. Recently published statistics suggest that almost one half of adult Americans are overweight and one in four are obese. This new syndrome is a lethal risk factor for heart attacks and strokes. The eleven year study by Kuopio found that middle-aged men with metabolic syndrome were about three times more likely to die of coronary artery disease than unaffected individuals, and twice the risk of stroke. This combination of risk factors is also vitally important for women, and several investigations have evaluated their effects on women's health. The Framingham Heart Study found that diabetic women weighted more and hid higher blood pressure than non-diabetic women. In addition, their LDL (so-called "good" cholesterol) levels were lower than those of non-diabetic women. A Finnish study of newly diagnosed diabetic women determined likewise that they were more obese and had lower good cholesterol levels than non-diabetic women. Sixty percent of them were also taking medication for high blood pressure. The common denominator for this syndrome is abdominal obesity. The Framingham Study found that as weight rises and falls, so too do blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Obesity leads to diabetes, and low good cholesterol. Dr. William Castelli, director of the study, ahs described this characteristic pattern of obesity: "When you put the 'spare tire on at the waist, you produce a different kind of LDL, much more atherogenic (causing atherosclerosis). You raise your blood pressure and increase your lipids (fats)." It is estimated that obese individuals develop diabetes at more than twice the rate of others. Why are such seemingly different problems such as obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol grouped together? Because they are very much interrelated and there are similar or identical methods to prevent and/or control them. What to do? The best approach to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight has four basic components. None of them involves being on a diet: 1. Understand and modify your relationship with food. This will enable you to be in control, rather than being under the control of compulsive or rigid and unrealistic goals. According to author Dr. Janet Greeson, who has managed not to regain the 150 pounds she lost more than 18 years ago, "Diets are not really treating the person, and so if you focus on food as the problem, you are not successful. The problem is the feelings a person associates with food." 2. Enjoy what you eat by becoming a conscious eater. This will help you select healthy and satisfying food, including some of your favorites, rather than limit you to rigid calorie-cutting and self-deprivation. Experiment. Become a student of your own behavior. 3. Exercise regularly. Physical activity is a powerful weapon in weight control for several reasons. It burns calories, it contributes to positive feelings and thus reduces the stresses and emotions that cause overeating, and it restores a consciousness of the body, which overweight people tend to lose. Exercise allows you to reclaim yourself physically and thereby strengthens you motivation to achieve and maintain healthy weight. 4. Create a support system. This can come from family, friends and/or a support group. Joining a structured weight loss program like Weight Watchers can be invaluable. Such a program provides you with a caring environment and people who both understand and share your struggle with overeating. They help you to become more honest about your eating habits and when you feel you may be slipping, they are there to help.
