Jobs - QA Manager

By Michael Russell If you're thinking about getting a job as a QA Manager, there are certain things you should be aware of as far as what the job will most likely require and what qualifications you will need to have in order to get such a job. A QA Manager's position can be very rewarding. It can also be very stressful. QA stands for quality assurance. This means that whatever product your company sells, you're responsible for making sure that the quality of the product itself is as high as possible and that there are no serious problems with the product. The importance of this job can't be shown any better than in the software industry. While the QA department is in no way responsible for actually creating the software that the company sells, they are responsible for testing the software. In doing so they have to test not only every single function of the software but every single combination of functions. For example, the copy and paste function of text editor may work fine in an isolated test. But it is quite possible that a bug can be discovered in the software if just prior to doing a copy and paste, the file save option is executed. Don't laugh. Stranger things have happened. The QA manager usually doesn't have much to do with the hands on testing of the software itself. The manager will probably have a team of QA testers. It is the manager's responsibility to assign each tester and certain module of the software to test and to instruct them to document each test and the result of each test so that they can be reviewed and sent to the programmers if any changes need to be made. It is also the responsibility of the QA manager, once all the fixes to the software have been done and the final tests are completed, to make sure that all documentation for the software is written up. The QA manager may do this alone or assign different parts of the documentation to be handled by different members of the QA staff. In order to perform the duties of a QA manager, the person has to have excellent analytical skills. They must be able to walk through a process, step by step and not leave anything out, much like how a programmer goes about doing his programming. A QA manager must also have very good communication skills. They must be able to communicate the needs of the program changes to the programmers and also be able to effectively communicate what needs to be tested to the rest of the staff. They also need to be able to write very well, especially for the purpose of completing the documentation needed for the software itself. Every QA manager position is going to be different as each company is going to have a different product. But the general overall concept is going to be the same regardless of what you're working on. A QA manager's position can be very rewarding in pay and in sense of accomplishment. It can also be a very long day more often than not. Michael Russell

Starting a Greenhouse Business

By Michelle Moore You might be interested in starting a business venture with a greenhouse. You can grow growing bedding plants, cut flowers, herbs or vegetables and sell them in a roadside stand or at a local farmers market. We have customers who have paid for their greenhouse this way in just one season. If you love working in the soil and growing things you may want to consider a greenhouse business. Greenhouses are the perfect venue for a business. Greenhouses may be used by someone who wants to make a little extra money or even as a full-time job. You need to be aware that there will be an investment to get started with any greenhouse business. It would be a good idea to make a business plan. Start a greenhouse business plan by reading everything you can find on greenhouses. Realize that greenhouse businesses also require a large time commitment. This is not an easy business to get started, but if you have time and money to investment, you can be very successful. Find out what things will grow the best in greenhouses where you live. Consider, too, which things you enjoy growing the most and have been successful with. Also, as part of your greenhouse business plan, you will need to determine your market. Make sure there is a demand for your product. Herbs can be a good crop for greenhouses. They are quite popular now and sell very well. There are many herbs to choose from and several are very easy to grow. Organic fruits and vegetables are other crops that are selling well. People are becoming more health conscious and are looking for organically grown food. If you are creative and like to work with flower arranging or dried flower bouquets, you can use greenhouses to grow everything you need. Fresh flowers and dried flowers are in demand all year long. Greenhouses can be the answer for you if you are interested in starting a new business. Michelle Torres has nearly 20 years experience using and designing greenhouses and is an avid home gardener. Wrong Product for a Conceived Market

By John T Jones, Ph.D. Big corporations make mistakes all the time. They can take higher risks than small businesses because they have more resources to fall back on than do small businesses. A disaster can wipe a small business. It happens all the time. Big businesses lose money in different ways. For example, one company that I was familiar with had a brainstorm in the boardroom. They could protect themselves from fluctuations in the gold market by buying and selling gold futures. They practiced right there in the boardroom and lost several hundred thousands dollars in minutes. They said, So much for that idea, and went back to what they were good at, which was marketing their products. Now a loss of several hundred thousand dollars would wipe out many small businesses. A big company takes such losses in stride. Of course a persistent loss would cause heads to roll. Young marketers with fresh ideas are often sought out by big companies. If they replace old marketer because of salary limitations, then trouble can be at the door. Its best to work young marketers into the system gradually and let normal retirement situations gradually remove the old marketers. (I know that some of you Ivy League guys may have reasons to disagree.) The problem is that a person full of ideas has a mixed bag. He might have a few good ideas inside his idea cargo, but may not be a very good evaluator of those ideas. In fact he probably has irrational exuberance.Thats where experienced marketers can help. Product flaws may not show up in focus groups or surveys because the questions that need answers are not asked. Lets take an example or two: Example A: Folks are pulled off the floor of a super mall and brought into a small conference room. They are asked, Which of these new dim winkles do you like best? The attendees pick the red dim winkle 6 to 1 over the other colors. The participants are given a $25 bill as promised and sent on their way. The survey group calls the company making dim winkles and tells them to make sure their new dim winkles are red. As these decisions are being made, Grace Snodgrass and Mary Hardcroft decide to go to Nordstroms Department Store to spend their newly-earned $25. As they leave the conference room and out of sight of the testing staff, Mary says, Id never buy one of those new dim winkles. I couldnt figure out how to use the darn thing. Grace said, I couldnt even figure out what it was supposed to do. Well, weve got our $25.00. Example B: Mary and Grace are again invited to take part in a focus group by the survey company. The group is given a watch-a-ma-call-it to look at. They are invited to test the gadget in the kitchen, to jump on it, try to bend it over a chair, and to do whatever else they want to test it. When they are finished, the survey folks decide that it passed every conceivable test and did what the customers expected it to do. They notified that the new product passed every test and could be placed in production. Now walking to Nordstroms Department Store with $100 checks in hand, Mary and Grace are very happy indeed. Mary says, That was a great gadget but I think Ill stick with the old way that my grandmother taught me. Grace says, I wouldnt pay $11.95 for that thing. What would I do with the one Ive got? Anyway, even if one of the kids dropped my old one down the garbage disposal I could replace it for $3.95. The company I referred to above (where a loss was generated by trading gold futures) developed a consumer product for what I call a Conceived Market. This is in contrast to an actual existing market. (Ive never called it that before but Im sticking to it here. At a talk at a national meeting I called it a "nonexistent market." I also published an article internationally in trade magazines that referred to "an undesired product for a nonexistent market.") The product was a cross between what the rich would want for Sunday use and what the everyday housewife would want for everyday use. It was the first time that such a product tried to satisfy two different functions. The targeted group was supposed to be highly-mobile members of the business community. It turned out, despite consumer testing, that this group did not exist. Exactly what did not exist was a target group that thought like the company marketers. What did exist was the age old concept that you should have the everyday product and the Sunday-only-product and it had nothing to do with position in society. It had a lot to do if you were a woman taught by your mother that you needed both products to be happy. So the company was not too concerned. The women could buy the product for one purpose or the other. What happened was that the competition knew the cost structure. They offered a similar offshore product at two-thirds the price. This price could not be met. The product was dumped by a television marketer. Having the resources to do so, the new technologies developed by the campaign were used to produce a superior everyday product that was very successful and required factory expansion. This is called making lemonade from a lemon. Can you guess what the product was? The End copyrightJohn T. Jones, Ph.D. 2005 John T. Traditional Foods Provide Comfort

By Elizabeth Catalanotto A year later, the devastation caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita continues to affect the lives those from the affected areas. While some continue to rebuild others are settling into new hometowns and states. But despite all that has been endured many continue to keep the spirit of their Cajun culture alive while adapting to these life changes. This may be in part to the joie de vivre (joy of living) approach to life that permeates throughout Louisiana. This joy of living attitude is seen in all aspects of Cajun culture from the numerous state festivals and extravagant Mardi Gras celebrations to the family get-togethers centered on traditional Cajun cuisine. It is apparent that Louisianans seek to enjoy life to its fullest throughout the year. Because many of Louisiana's traditions focus on the enjoyment and sharing of food that it is often said that "Cajuns live to eat." So it seems fitting that those who have suffered in the aftermath of these hurricanes would benefit from eating and sharing familiar comfort foods with each other. Some of the most popular Cajun dishes like red beans and rice, gumbo, etouffee, and jambalaya can help trigger thoughts of home and happier times for those affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Since several of the customary dishes in Louisiana are simple one pot meals that can easily feed a large crowd, many shelters served these traditional Cajun meals to provide evacuees with a familiar reminder of home in the early days following storms. Turning to these traditional Cajun foods for comfort may help evacuees feel more at home even if they now live hundreds of miles from their home state of Louisiana. They can even continue to cook their favorite Cajun meals with Louisiana ingredients by ordering them online. Most Louisiana online stores offer everything from Louisiana hot pepper sauces and coffee to stuffed turduckens and fresh Louisiana seafood. Simple comfort foods may not be a cure all for the damage caused, but they can certainly put some well needed familiarity back into any true Cajun's life. Elizabeth Catalanotto is a contributing writer for CajunGrocer Louisianas premier online food store offering a wide selection of Cajun foods including turduckens, andouille sausages, alligator meat and more. Winter Craft Ideas For Kids

By Susanne Myers When the weather is cold and wet outside, and kids are cooped up inside, winter crafts are a great way to keep them entertained. With just a few simple crafting supplies you can keep them busy for hours and avoid cabin fever at the same time. Give it a try and come up with some winter craft ideas for your kids using some of the suggestions below. Paper Snowflakes Do you remember cutting fancy snowflakes out of a piece of paper when you where a kid? Your child will enjoy this simple craft just as much. Get out a few pieces of white paper, fold them and start cutting out snowflakes. When you have a nice collection of different designs, hang them on a window, or get out a big sheet of dark blue or black construction paper and glue them on for a fun snowflake collage. Make A Snow Landscape. Get a shoebox or any other size box, turn it on its side and put some cotton batting in the bottom as a layer of snow. Then let your kids craft little houses out of milk carton boxes adding some more cotton batting to the roofs for a layer of snow. Use small branches and twigs as trees, and cotton balls as snow covered bushes. Cut some an irregular circular shape out of light blue paper to represent a lake. Different size Styrofoam balls (or marshmallows), held together by a toothpick make for a great snowman. Inside Snow Angels Let the kids make snow angles inside, when theres not enough snow to do it outside. You and the kids can tear newspaper into small strips or pieces. Or just run the newspaper through the paper shredder. Pile it up on the kitchen floor. If you have a lot of packing peanuts, those will work as well. Let your kids lay down and make snow angels by moving their arms and legs. Dont forget to take a picture of the process and the finished snow angle. When youre done, sweep it all up and put it into your recycle bin. For more fun winter craft ideas including a snowman craft and ideas for snow painting visit http://www.kinderinfo.com

Deal With Your Partner's Mood Swings

By Justin Meyer A side effect of some medications given to people suffering from depression is mood swings. While this may seem ironic and cruel, it is fact. How do you deal with this, when you are the watching your significant other go from happy to upset to depressed back to happy. How do you reassure them when they are up and down, especially when the medication is supposed to be curing this very problem? There are a few things that you can do to help. The first is to offer consistency. Regardless of their mood, offer the same support that you have been offering. Make sure that your partner knows that you understand what they are going through and that you are supporting them no matter what. It is also important that you understand that the best way to deal with mood swings is not to ignore them, but to acknowledge them. Sometimes your significant other will require more help and other times they will be more self-reliant. Going with the flow is crucial in this scenario. If you find that there are more downward swings, or that you find the upward swings to be shorter or less effective, then it might be something to point out. If the side effects of the drug are causing worse symptoms than the original disease, the medication is clearly problematic. Sometimes it is hard for the person taking the medication to notice the situation. You need to make sure that you bring the scenario to their attention so they can make sure that the therapist and psychiatrist are aware of the problems. Why Use A Third Party Marketer For Education Lending?

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Daniel_Rivera]Daniel Rivera When shopping for a student loan for yourself or a family member you might find your options very limited, and sometimes very confusing. Traditionally, you have had two options. You can seek financing advice from the schools financial advisor where you or your child will be attending, or you can use the internet or yellow pages to find money for tuition, books and board. Recently, a third option has become available to borrowers for experienced unbiased advice and funding for college. Third party marketers can answer questions about interest rates, length of repayment terms, payment size and how to deal with unexpected situations that arise during the application process thru the repayment period. Since they represent you and not the interests of the college or the lender they can recommend lenders that are easier to work with, that have better interest rate discounts and that would have better customer service. By not being tied to a particular lender or school, the third party marketer can suggest lenders that are best suited to your needs, especially long term needs as they apply to post graduate repayment. A good example of a similar situation you currently encounter when trying to finance an education is the automobile business. You can finance your car purchase right there at the dealership. While this will make the purchase experience very smooth and painless, the interest rate is usually higher than rates that might be found at credit unions or even banks if you took the time or had the opportunity to shop. Conversely, using a bank or lender you found in the yellow pages or on the internet says little about their knowledge or customer service, and could hinder the purchase process. In either scenario, the seller looks out for the sellers interests and the bank looks out for the banks interests, and either one is looking to make as much money as possible in the transaction. A Third Party Marketer exists solely as a customer service entity. In the case of most loans there are absolutely no charges made to the consumer. The third party marketer brings borrower and lender together and is paid by the lender for arraigning a successful transaction. Most borrowers do not know that they have options in securing financing for their education, and that accepting the wrong option could cost them tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars unnecessarily during the repayment of the loan. For questions about existing student loans, if you or a friend will need a student loan in the near future or if you have a soon to graduate high school senior you should call a third party marketer. Remember, you education will last a lifetime, your student loans shouldnt. Daniel Rivera is President of Federal Student Loan Solutions an experienced third party marketer. Electronic Newsletters - Building a Personal Marketing Database

By Tony Alessandra Having a free newsletter or eZine is an essential marketing tool for any business, individual, or organization. Upon first consideration, it may seem like a third-rate marketing ploy, or not worth the hassle to maintain. However, when you create a newsletter, you not only provide your subscribers with valuable information, you also create a mechanism to reach out and touch your subscribers every month or week, or any time period of your choosing. Everyone who receives your eZine is a potential customer. Whether you are selling your services or products, each newsletter is an opportunity to generate revenue. It is also a chance to increase recognition and grow your business. And the reason its free? You want as many names in your database as you can get. In order for someone to give you their valuable, personal information, you need to provide them with something equally valuable in return. Also, if you ask people to pay for your newsletter, some may if they perceive significant value above and beyond the fee, but most will just move on to someone who will give them the equivalent information for free. Your eZine can be created in either plain text or HTML (HyperText Markup Language) formats, or both. HTML is the same code that is used to create web pages, so it allows you to incorporate design elements such as colors, graphics, photos, and links in your eZine. At one point, plain text vs. HTML format for newsletters was a highly debated topic and the vote was pretty evenly split. With the advancement of technology, such as increased storage capacity in inboxes, this is no longer such a pressing issue; however, there are a couple of things to know. First and foremost, you want your readers to be able to read your newsletter. There are a couple of great websites that will help you manage and send out your newsletter with this priority in mind; I use Aweber (http://www.aweber.com). This site sends out both types and then the receivers email software chooses which format will be the most readable. However, if you cannot send out both, there are certain advantages and disadvantages to either type. Text: Text documents are the easiest to read because all email servers can receive them. They also are less likely to be caught in spam filters, so you can be sure that your subscribers are receiving your newsletter (see tip 9 for more information on spamming). However, you have to worry about wrapping the text so that it looks the same in everyones inbox. And, you can only work with text color to make your content and product presentations flashy and visually exciting and interesting. HTML: As noted above, an eZine in HTML format will display like a web page. However, not all email programs will be able to read it properly. While the technology has improved, many people still own older machines that cannot decipher HTML embedded in an email. Also, the spam rating for this type of newsletter is significantly higher than it is for a text document, so theres a chance it may end up in your readers spam folders. The possibilities for design, color-scheme, and product placement are endless, and usually make it worth your time to explore this option. Best of both worlds: Another option for format is to send out a plain text message that simply introduces that issue of your eZine, then provides a live link to the full version online, which can include as many graphics and media as you want. This ensures that your email will get through, but also allows you to take full advantage of online resources. Keep in mind, however, that not all readers will be willing to click out of the message to another web page. Consider whats best for your readers. Content It is essential that you take your newsletter or eZine seriously and create high-value content. If you deliver sub-par information, you will quickly lose subscribers. At the same time, however, dont overwhelm your readers with too much information, even good information. Short is better than long. Many people are inundated with emails every day; they are not going to take the time to read your weekly novel. If you can condense your message into three really pithy paragraphs and deliver great value to your reader, you are golden. Ideal target: Try limiting each issue of your eZine to 350 words of text. This will fit on most viewers screens, without having to scroll down. Subscribers really appreciate having all the content at their immediate view. Once youve struck this balance and engaged your readers, you can then use your content to promote your products, speaking engagements, or your media placements. If you can incorporate a plug for your latest eBook, mp3, or any other item into your newsletter, you will sell infinitely more merchandise. You will do best if you can make a connection between the message you are sending and the product you are presenting. If your message is all about reading body language and you can say, For more about the subtle messages you send with your body language, check out my new eBook on By giving readers a bit of useful information, you are creating an interest in the specific topic, and you can build on that by immediately offering to expand their knowledge of the topic with a related product. The best balance: While each issue of your eZine is a great marketing tool, theres good reason to give your readers a break from promotions once in awhile. Theyll surely appreciate the occasional reminder that you are providing a worthwhile service outside of your product plugs, and that might make them even more willing to purchase a product the next time. A good balance is a 3:1 ratio of issues without and with product plugs. Sell Your Products Having products to sell and incorporating them into your eZine are obviously a great way to generate income and make your newsletter profitable. I currently make on average about $8,000 a month from products people buy off of my newsletter. Thats a lot of money! Ive been able to accomplish this by taking the time to create 70 pieces of merchandise. These range from eBooks and mp3s to assessments and soft-cover books. I am also in the process of creating Podcasts and video downloads to complete my range of media offerings. Explore all of your options. Your products do not have to be tangible; they can be electronic. Things like eBooks and mp3s are great items because there are no manufacturing, distributing, or shipping costs. Once you pay to create the file, thats it. Its pure profit! Also, your products should be as specific as possible. If your newsletter is on a broad topic, such as cooking, create products that address specific issues. You may have how to grill the perfect steak, or when a vegetarian menu is your best option, or the top 25 chocolate recipes. By breaking down your expertise into specific titles that solve a certain problem or meet a specific need, you will be able to easily generate products and start earning money off of your free newsletter. In order to sell products in your eZine, you will need some type of online shopping cart to process the transactions. Most of these systems have the capability to automatically handle the purchase and distribution of eProducts such as mp3s and eBooks (I use AutomatedShoppingCarts.com). Another useful feature called Ad-Tracking allows you to track which purchases were made from each eZine so you can monitor your most and least effective product sales copy. Ad-Tracking also allows you to do split testing, which enables you to track the results of several versions of sales copy for the same product. This process will let you see which sales copy is the most effective at generating sales. By dividing your web traffic for a product between several destination pages, each with different sales copy, you will be able to easily determine which page is performing best. There are also software programs available to help you test and optimize your online ads. Promotional Content There are three approaches to newsletter content: the type that exists to sell products, the type that exists to promote the author, and the type that purely gives information. Obviously, if you have a lot of products and are using your newsletter to generate income, the first option is the best. However, make sure that the content of your newsletter doesnt suffer. You are still providing your readers a service and feeding them valuable content. If your content suffers because you are trying too hard to sell your products, you will lose subscribers and ultimately lose money. If you are a speaker, author, consultant, personal coach, or expert who wants to gain recognition, you should promote yourself in your newsletter. You should talk about what youve been doing, your recent articles and media mentions, your speaking engagements, problems you have helped your clients solve, opportunities you have helped your clients seize, and how potential clients can contact you. After all, there is no better product than yourself, so you need to market your services as effectively as possible. If you dont like the idea of using your newsletter as a promotional device, the solely informational option is probably what youll choose. Companies can use newsletters to educate customers on effective product usage or share ideas from other customers. While your newsletter is still valuable as a database generator, I would advise against abstaining from all promotional copy. If you are going to take the time to create a newsletter, you want it to work for you as much as it can. There is always a way to find a balance between maintaining the integrity of your newsletter and either promoting yourself or your new project/product. Auto Responder vs. Here & Now Tips There are two different types of newsletter formats, the auto responder and the Here & Now time sensitive tip. Auto-responders (or evergreen eZines) are a series of tips or eZines that are created in advance and sent out at set intervals (weekly, monthly, etc). First, you must write several tips or newsletters that you put into a reserve database of eZines. When someone subscribes to your newsletter or tip series, they receive issue #1. Consequently, if person A signed up for your weekly tip a year ago and person B signed up yesterday, person A would be on tip #50, while person B would only be on tip #1. This is a great system if you do not want to create a new newsletter every month or week. Once you write enough tips, you can sit back and wait as your subscriber network reads through them all. However, you need to monitor your newsletters and subscribers carefully. Once your readers start to catch up on the eZines youve already written, you need to create more. The downside of this system is that you cannot make your tips relevant to items in the breaking news or seasonal happenings. The topics need to be able to stand on their own. The Here & Now time sensitive tip is an eZine you write each week or month. If you enjoy relating your advice to current events, holidays, or seasons, or just like writing a newsletter every so often, this is the best option for you. It is also a great way to promote your speaking engagements, current articles, or recent sightings to keep your readers up-to-date on your activities. If you are just starting out and dont have a lot of products to promote, this might be your best option because it allows you to create
visibility for your marketing efforts before you have product. The Layout Laying out your newsletter is extremely important. You have many more options with HTML, which makes your eZine display like a web page, than you do with plain text. However, if you are confined to text, play with color, spacing, and font to be as creative as possible. In HTML, it is important to create continuity between your website and the newsletter. If you have a logo, a slogan, or any type of branding on your website, make sure that it is also on your newsletter. I am a proponent of creating a column that takes up one third of the page either on the left or right side. While your content goes in the middle two-thirds of the page, this side column is purely promotional. You can use this space to write catchy copy about yourself and your products or services. Or, you can create buttons that make it easy for people to buy merchandise directly from your eZine. But most importantly, the best way to promote your products and your services is to make your newsletter as visually interesting as possible. Use of color, pictures, and design will entice people to buy and help them remember you. HTML layout also enables you to create hyperlinks within your message to pages on your website, particularly your shopping cart. (You can also do this in plain text, but it is clunky and intimidating.)
All the Stuff That Goes on the Bottom There are a couple of items that need to be included in every newsletter, regardless of its intended use. Most important is an easy way for your readers to subscribe and unsubscribe. Most newsletter service providers insert this link automatically and make it user-friendly. You also need: A link to update contact information. If your subscriber is changing email addresses, make it easy for them to keep subscribing to your eZine. A phrase about the author, i.e. Check out Dr. Alessandras website at to keep referring your readers back to your site and products. A copyright noticefor your own protection. A link that they can click on if they want to share the newsletter with their friends. If you are a speaker or author, contact information where interested parties can book you for a speaking engagement. A privacy policy. A legal disclaimer. Dont Spam! Every newsletter or eZine you send out gets rated by the recipients spam filter, and could, if youre not careful, end up in their spam folder! You want to keep this rating as low as possible. To do this, be conscious of your word choice, color scheme, and background template. Certain words, like free or guarantee, and certain non-web colors or excessive use of graphics trigger spam alerts. Also, limit your database to people who have signed up to receive your newsletter and to those who youve done business with. By sending mail to parties who have opted in, you will be less likely to be flagged as a spammer. But why care about spamming? Well, there are a couple of reasons. First, if your message has a high spam rating, it will never make it to your subscribers inboxes. Many eZine systems allow you to monitor what percentage of your emails is actually getting through. It is a good idea to keep on top of these stats. A newsletter is worthless if your readers arent reading it. Secondly, there are anti-spam laws in place, both on the federal and state levels. While they arent generally enforced unless the violation is egregious, just being aware of these laws is essential. The federal anti-spam law, called the CAN-SPAM Act, was passed by Congress in 2003. It contains several important provisions that you should know about: Your email's "From," "To," and routing information including the originating domain name and email address must be accurate and identify the person who initiated the email. The subject line cannot mislead the recipient about the contents or subject matter of the message. You must not send to anyone unless they opted-in to your list by signing up or you have an existing business relationship with them. You must provide recipients with a mechanism to opt-out of receiving future emails. Each violation is subject to fines of up to $11,000. But most importantly, if you consistently spam your subscribers, the ISP (e.g., AOL, Comcast, etc.) can block your domain name. These big ISPs provide their users with spam-flagging tools. If enough people flag your newsletter as spam, these providers will block EVERYTHING you send. That means that no one from AOL will be able to receive newsletters, emails, or anything else from you. And, unlike the spam legislation, these ISP providers monitor spam very closely because they want to keep their subscribers happy. And if they do decide to block you, there is no warning; they can just flip the switch. Once blocked, it is also extremely difficult to get unblocked, and you must provide the ISP with evidence that you are not in fact a spammer. Monetizing Your List Deciding to offer access to your subscriber base to someone else, or sell your list of subscribers, is a slippery slope that will take you down a path of consumerism that may or may not hurt your business. Selling your list to another vendor may result in customer dissatisfaction, spam issues, and most importantly, loss of subscribers. I wouldnt do it. However, you can partner with another vendor or exchange your list with someone in a data-share arrangement. If someone has a product that you think would benefit your customers, you can make an arrangement with the seller to give him or her access to your list of subscribers. You can put an advertisement in your newsletter and tie your content to this other product or service. However, make sure that the product you are promoting is not, in any way, in competition with your products or services. Also, you should create an agreement with the other vendors with whom you are exchanging marketing lists so that they promote your products and services in their newsletters. This type of agreement, or exchange of lists, is a great way to expand your marketing reach and also maintain the integrity of your newsletter and the loyalty of your readers. Keep in mind that a list exchange, or joint venture as its sometimes called, is not the same as selling your list. You dont give up control of the information in your database; you simply agree to mail them your list without giving them access to your actual database. They only get access to your list through you. Another important issue to keep in mind is to make sure that the person who you are exchanging lists with has a list thats comparable to yours in some way. Size can matter; if you have a list of 5,000 subscribers, its not usually a good idea to exchange your list with someone who only has 1,000. Sometimes, however, the content of the list is more important than its size. If the list contains information on the best 1,000 people out there to whom you wouldnt otherwise have access, then that would be a good deal. Try to keep the exchange even and in mutual benefit to both parties. This way, your readers get the benefit of exposure to new information, and you get the benefit of expanding your reach through all of your hard work on your newsletters! Lose Weight with 10,000 Steps A Day

By Jakob Culver In a quest to burn the extra calories, walking seems to be the easiest way. Experts have revealed that walking 10,000 steps a day can help you drop those unwanted pounds faster than just about any other method of weight loss. Not only that walking will also help you keep the weight off for a longer period of time as it builds your muscles while keeping your heart at a fat-burning rate.
Quick facts about walking 10,000 steps Use a Pedometer: For counting the number of steps that you have covered the best approach is to have a pedometer which can help you easily keep track of the distance you have covered throughout your day as well as the number of steps that you have taken. (A pedometer is a small box-shaped calculator that you can clip to your belt or pants pocket in the same way you would wear a beeper.) While purchasing for a pedometer, doubly ensure that you select a model that has both distance and well as individual step readings. This will be helpful for you to learn how many steps go into one mile. You can increase steps to your count choosing the stairs over the elevator or walking to your colleague's desk rather than sending an email. Calculate the Time it takes: Using either you pedometer or a counting method, calculate the approximate time it takes for you to traverse a specific distance, such as a mile. Calculate this number several times on several different days and average the figures together. You will then be able to determine approximately how long it will take you to walk a portion of your steps if you choose to spend a set amount of time walking them off. For example, if you know that you can walk all 10,000 steps in an hour, then you can elect to dedicate an hour everyday to walking your steps. But if spending 1 hr is not sufficient then break then you can add up increments of ten minutes at a time until you reach your goal. To break the monotony select two-three routes to follow, and do the measurement a Route Measure a route based on the time and distances it takes you to walk your 10,000 steps. Go for a long route for days when you have a surfeit of energy, a short route for days when you are tired, and a mid-length route for days when you are energized but busy. Growing and Harvesting Dill

By Jacqueline Carroll Dill is one of the easiest herbs to grow and would make a great first herb for someone who has never grown herbs before. You'll find lots of uses for both the fronds and the seeds in the kitchen. A sprig of dill will perk up almost any soup, salad, or main dish. You can buy transplants at your local garden center, but there is no need because dill is easy to grow from seeds. You won't even have to start them indoors - just plant your dill seeds right in the garden where you want them to grow. When to Plant Dill likes to be planted in cool weather. In warm winter areas that don't experience a hard frost, you can plant dill in fall or winter. In cooler areas, plant dill a week or two before your last hard frost. After the first sowing, plant again every 10 days or so for a continuous crop. When growing in containers, use a deep container to accommodate the long roots, and remember that you will eventually have a plant that is three feet tall. Plants grown in containers may require staking. Cultivation - Here are a few suggestions to start you on your way to a healthy crop of dill: - Dill, like most herbs, loves to bask in the sun, but will tolerate afternoon shade. - Dill grows up to 3 feet tall, so plant it in the back of your flower, vegetable or herb garden. - Sow seeds close together. This will allow the plants, which blow over easily to support each other. - Cover the seeds lightly, and allow a week or two for them to germinate. - For a continuous crop, sow repeatedly from mid spring to early summer. - Don't plant near caraway, fennel or angelica. - Caterpillars are fond of dill, and can be handpicked if they become a nuisance. Harvesting and Preserving The best way to use dill is fresh from the garden, so during the growing season, cut your dill to use fresh as you need it. If not kept cut, your dill will go to seed, so cut often until you are ready to switch to seed production. If you find that you have cut more than you can use, dry the excess in the microwave. Spread the dill in a single layer on a paper towel and microwave on high for 3 minutes. The result is beautiful and tasty - much better than dried dill you buy in the grocery store. After microwaving, remove and discard the hard stems, crumble the leaves, and store in an airtight container protected from light. Once seedheads begin to form, it's time to stop cutting dill for fresh use. Allow the seedheads to develop and dry completely, then cut them. You'll be able to remove the seeds easily with your fingers. Medicinal Uses: To brew a stomach-soothing tea, use two teaspoons of mashed seeds per cup of boiling water. Steep for ten minutes. Drink up to three cups a day. In a tincture, take 1/2 to 1 teaspoon up to three times a day. To treat colic or gas in children under two, give small amounts of a weak tea. Many herbalists recommend combining dill and fennel to ease colic in infants.` Culinary Uses The taste of dill leaves resembles that of caraway, while the seeds are pungent and aromatic. Freshly cut, chopped leaves enhance the flavor of dips, herb butter, soups, salads, fish dishes, and salads. The seeds are used in pickling and can also improve the taste of roasts, stews and vegetables. Try grinding the seeds to use as a salt substitute. Both the flowering heads and seeds are used in flavored vinegars and oils. Take Care of Your Skin

By Kadence Buchanan Every woman desires to have a beautiful and flawless skin. But in order to achieve such an outcome, it is essential to know which the right way to do it is. Today's cosmetic industry provides a woman with so many choices that is rather difficult to select one that covers the specific needs of a particular skin complexion. Thus, it is important for a woman to know what exactly she needs to look for and how to apply what she purchases so as not to suffer later due to lack of knowledge. - The 3 Steps: Every woman knows that there are three steps that can make skin feel clean and look healthy; cleansing, toning and moisturizing. But not all women know that it is important to use the products that are appropriate for their own skin type. Cleansing soaps can be rather harsh for your sensitive type of skin, or others do not clean as deeply as you wish. Buy the one that is appropriate for your skin's condition and try to observe how your skin reacts to every application; even if you have been using it for years. Additionally, if the toner you use makes your skin feel extremely dry afterwards, it is probably not the best choice for you. Even if you have previously used it and there was no irritation, due to temperature variations or season allergies, your skin may have become more sensitive and needs more care. In general the toner should be mild and not make your skin feel tight. Finally, if your skin type is oily it is better to purchase moisturizers that are oil free. Always apply some type of moisturizer after you wash your face. On a daily basis, regardless if you plan to use makeup or not, moisturizing your skin is extremely important for it to stay healthy and glow. Experts also advice women to use glycolic acid, as it is a gentle scrub that removes dull dead cells, surfacing a polished smooth skin. In fact, it gently exfoliates and retextures skin's surface. - Using sunscreen: It is vital for your skin's health to apply a skin sunscreen suitable for your skin's tone, every time you are going to expose your skin to the sun. This should not happen only every time you are planning to go to the beach. Even if you are driving to work on a sunny day and you are inside your car, it is important to protect your face and body by applying a sunscreen lotion at least fifteen minutes before you move outdoors. Remember to reapply if you are constantly out or you are sweating. - Balanced makeup: Stay close to your natural tone and always select a foundation that is suitable for your skin type. Looking fresh and keeping your skin healthy can be combined if you ask for experts help when visiting a beauty care salon or store and always remember to check the applicator before purchasing your new foundation. - Masque and glow: For an extremely good looking skin, apply a masque once or twice every week and you will have a radiant complexion in minutes. Consult an expert and buy the masque that will cover your skin's needs and will leave you with a refreshing feeling. - Soap is not always your best friend: Regular soaps are not for your face. The oil-rich protective film your skin produces to keep its surface healthy by preventing bacteria and other infections from developing is striped off your face if the wrong type of soap is used. Thus, use a soap-free cleanser and always apply a moisturizer afterwards. - Expensive is not better: Some women think that the expensive products usually have the best results. This is not always true. The important thing is to know your skin type and then research and buy the product that can cover your needs while not exceeding your budget's limits. Secret of Harmonious Relationships

By Guy Finley Our relationships with one another are often a source of distress. In general, the principal form of conflict we experience with others has to do with some form of consideration that we feel they are not giving to us. We often suffer from thoughts like these: "She is not being respectful enough." "He is not as kind as I want him to be." "They just don't care as deeply as I do." However, if we will be courageous enough to see the truth of the next insight, and then admit its finding into our heart and mind, we can change the real root of this underlying sense of our dissatisfaction with others along with the conflict it generates between those involved: Many times the very thing we want from the person we are with - for example, respect, patience, kindness, love - is the very thing that we ourselves either lack at the moment or otherwise somehow are withholding from them. The "catch" here is that we are mostly unconscious to our actual inner condition in these encounters with others, and here's a major reason why this happens: Hidden in each of us are certain clever "self-concealing devices" whose sole reason for being is to keep us asleep to ourselves and blindly serving their ends, most of which are to mechanically perpetuate struggle and conflict. One of the ways these conflict-producing characters stay undetected - while generating their strife - is to point the arrow of insufficiency at someone else. Each time this self successfully diverts our attention in this way here's what unfolds: Not only are we kept from coming awake to ourselves, but in this engineered spiritual sleep we are rendered unable to realize that the very quality we judge as missing in the person or persons before us is actually lacking in ourselves! A little inner work on our part reveals the truth of our condition. We almost always place certain character demands upon others, but almost never see that the nature in us making these demands is without the very substance it cries out as missing. No wonder the circle of disharmony continues. In our spiritual sleep we act as its unconscious continuous circumference! What's to be done? How can we change ourselves (first things first!) and at the same time help our friends and family grow in Spirit? How can we realize True Self, end this circle of conflict, and open ourselves to Real Conscience - one that could no more feel these present stresses as we do than the sun could feel pressure from the presence of a passing cloud? Let's see. The following example is intended to make a special needed point, but should it not fill the gap for you - because of preference or perhaps even prejudice - then you need to do the inner work to bridge these ideas with something born of your own experience. When we, in our love for God - either through prayer, contemplation or meditation - give to Him our praise or adoration - asking therein for a deeper measure of His Life - we are, in fact, graced by Him in proportion to the amount of love we find in our hearts to present before Him. The true Friends of God have always known this Law of reciprocal Divine Love. To state this same idea in simpler terms - and referring it to our need to open our hearts and stop judging others for what we see missing in them - here is the Great Principle: Giving to others what we ask for from them is how we receive what we wish. To give this spiritual Principle the important consideration it deserves, let's look at it through the objective eyes of the truth of our experience with others throughout our day-to-day lives. How many of us feel that the "others" in our life - particularly those people we are around every day, whether at home or at work - just don't treat us as we deserve? Again, and perhaps not all of the time, most of us feel slighted in our relationships. But how many of us can honestly say that we offer to our fellows what we want from them? Generally we extend olive branches and our considerate sympathies to those who we think can serve us, and rarely do we serve those who we are convinced have nothing we want. And yet we still want their respect, kindness or consideration. With this in mind let's return to the guiding Principle for this study: We must learn to give to others what we hope to get from them. How? Before we ask for someone's attention, let us first lend that person our own. Before we look to him or her for an act of consideration, let us offer one from ourselves. If we wish for kindness, let it begin with our own. Otherwise all we give each other are unconscious demands followed by judgment and disappointment. We must learn to take the true conscious initiative with each other and then - based in our understanding of this great spiritual Law that governs harmonious relationships - make the effort to be to others what we wish them to be for us. Here is a special exercise that can help us create more harmonious human relationships. We all know what it's like to find ourselves unhappy and in conflict with someone who just isn't giving us what we want or need from him or her. Whenever this happens we usually find fault with these people, judge them as being inadequate, and from these findings blame them for the negativity we now feel toward them. But how many of us are awake enough to offer these same people what we have asked them to give us - before we ask them for it? Even to attempt the following practice will reveal more to you about yourself than reading a thousand books on spiritual realization. To begin with, as we discussed earlier, we usually demand from others those interior qualities that we are in short supply of ourselves. For instance, it is impatience that leaps to judge impatience. Unkindness finds others unkind - and tells them so in no uncertain terms. Arrogance despises pride and makes sure that the proud know they are dreaming of unreal heights. On and on churns this cycle of disharmony until we go to work on ourselves, implementing the kind of true self transforming principles that follow. Whatever it may be that we find wanting in someone else, we must learn what it means to give that very thing to him or her. What we would have from others, or have them be towards us, we must provide or be ourselves. For instance, if we really want the person we are with to be open with us, we must first open up ourselves. When we know we tend to be critical of others because they don't show us the respect we would have, we must show these same people the respect we want. Now, add to these thoughts this last idea: Sometimes what we want from others, they just don't have within themselves to give. We make demands, for instance, that someone understand us when, at that point in his development - for whatever reason - it's impossible that he could. But wanting what we want, we act as though we are weary with him and may become condescending. This behavior on our part only convinces the person in question of his own shortcomings. What can we do instead? Give to him what we have of ourselves instead of taking away what little he has in himself. To give the fruit of such a conscious interior labor is to receive the goodness we ask for. This exercise in harmonious human relationships takes a great deal of attention and, more important, a great deal of being weary with finding everyone around us not as good as ourselves. Nevertheless, our real spiritual growth - our self-transformation - depends upon what we are willing to give, and not upon what we feel we are owed. Put these ideas to work. You will be shocked and amazed at your discoveries, and you will benefit from the healing that they bring to your relationships. Test Anxiety

By Eddie Tobey Although it is quite normal for most students to feel some level of stress and anxiety during examination days, yet in some cases where anxiety begins to hamper exam performance, it becomes a major hindrance. Test anxiety is caused due to many reasons, such as lack of preparation due to inappropriate time management, poor study habits, and inability to organize information. Along with that, constant peer and parental pressure to perform well and the dread of failure can wreck havoc in the lives of students. A fallout of this stress is Test Anxiety Disorder. Test anxiety may even infuse certain bodily changes in the students like perspiration, stomach upset, fast heartbeat, tension in the muscles, headache or sweaty palms. Test anxiety leads to mounting nervousness which distorts the reading, understanding, organizing, retrieving and answering as well as performance skills of the people. The only way to cope with it or combat it is by studying hard, learning and practicing on a regular basis and avoiding laziness, procrastination and day dreaming. One should learn to focus and concentrate on the material that is being read and should never forget to relax that is, take long deep breaths along with proper sleep or rest, so as to stay rejuvenated. There are certain means through which the power of concentration can be increased. Backyard Birding Tips

By Ronald F. Patterson I've fed and cared for wild birds since I was a 10 year old boy (I'm 52). I come up with several
ideas and ways to make backyard birding more enjoyable for others. For example: keep predators away from your bluebird house by using carpet tackboard on the post/pole your nestbox is sitting on. What is the ideal birdbath, and much more. Well, here is another tip and just in time for a busy wasp and yellow jacket season. For the past two years, I've researched and worked with "mint" as an insecticide and deterrent for wasps, ants, and mosquitoes. Researching online, chats with a local herbologist and of course, experimenting with my new brain child. Some insects are attracted by color. Others by smell and yet some hunt and feed by both sight and smell. Most insects hate to smell of mint and plants in the mint family. Mint is also a Neuro-toxin to wasps. Get some mint on a wasp and it is one dead insect. Are you getting the idea yet? Every time you clean and fill your hummingbird feeder, dab some "mint extract" on the feeder and the hanger. Wasps and yellow jackets will stay away or risk death. Because mint is a food item, it wont harm birds. Hummers, like most birds have poor sniffers and the strong smell of mint doesn't bother them at all. Serve up a mixture of 1 oz. pure mint extract and 10 oz. rubbing alcohol. Spray your nest boxes thoroughly and let it soak in. The rubbing alcohol evaporates causing no harm and the smell of mint lingers for up to 4 weeks. Continue to spray as needed. If there is already a wasp nest in your box, spray the wasps and watch them die before your eyes. I haven't dealt with blowflies, but I am interested in finding out if "mint" will kill or keep blowflies out of nest boxes. Anyone interested in assisting here? Try this out as well. Mix 1 oz. of mint with 15 oz. of rubbing alcohol. You now have an insect repellent. While using this, the mosquitoes have left me alone and I smell good too. As the dog days of summer pass us by, wasps and yellow jackets are becoming more aggressive in their hunt to feed an ever growing population of larvae. Fortunately, here in Michigan winter kills off all but the queens. But what about warmer climates where a wasp population can grow and grow and grow, Try it, "Mint Extract" an insect repellent that is earth friendly. Amazing how nature provides for her self isn't it? Ronald Patterson has a passion for wildbirds. He's been feeding and caring for birds for more then 40 years. Evaluation of Pop-up Trade Show Displays Currently on the Market

By Chad Leiffert The pop-up style expandable frame display has now been in existence for over 15 years. It is the most common portable display now on the market. The first were made of a flexible fiberglass frame, with aluminum channels bars and roll able fabric that was attached to the framework with magnets. The basic design has not changed over the years, but the options this technology offers has. The frame expands to a large size, allowing a full 10' wide exhibit to be transported in a relatively small case. The case also contains the fabric, lights and vertical bars allowing for the fabric or photo-mural panels to be attached. Most 10' pop-ups , in their case weigh under 90 pounds complete. There now are many manufacturers of many types, the most common being a 10' width display described as follows: A. Standard Grade Popup - includes lighter weight aluminum frame, individual aluminum, PVC or steel channel bars, Velcro (Frontrunner or Prelude) fabric panels and thermo molded shipping cases with wheels. They are quite common; usually incorporate two 200 watt halogen lights, and a case of some type that can be converted to a podium. They are a standard ten foot wide curved design. The price ranges for the standard curved models in a ten foot width run $995-$2995, depending on the vendor. B. Commercial Grade Popup - includes heavy weight frame with nylon connectors, folding steel channel bars, Velcro (Frontrunner or Prelude) panels and the choice of 1 or 2 thermo molded shipping cases with wheels. Less common, as they are more expensive, they also come in different shapes, straight or curved, and in many widths. There are only a few brands that may be labeled "commercial" as the tendency of the marketplace has been to make the pop-up exhibit lighter and less expensive to own. They are more for companies that exhibit often, with different employees setting up the display each time. They can take far more abuse than the standard type pop-up found for sale everywhere on the internet. The price ranges for these types run $1795-$3495, depending on the vendor. C. Photo Mural Grade Popup - A standard grade popup with the substitution of photomural panels instead of the Velcro fabric panels and includes everything in the standard grade pop up. These are still standard pop-ups, but have a greater appeal as they have powerful large-format graphics on the front, attracting attention. They are more expensive, because of the photo panels, but still are just as portable. The customer has to be careful here as many types of panel printing can be offered, from the most expensive DURST LAMBDA to inexpensive ink-jet processes. The prices run from $2195-$5995, depending on the vendor and the print process. D. Fabric Mural Grade Popup - A popup curved or non-curved frame with a replaceable fabric graphic mural. The fabric mural is pre-attached to the frame, making set-up much easier than the standard pop-up with photomurals. This display offers a full photomural effect without a cumbersome set up procedure. It transports in a lightweight nylon bag, hard shipping case and lights are usually available. These weigh less than half of what standard 10' pop-ups weigh. The graphic face usually gets wrinkled in the bag, but his can be remedied by the owner with stretching and steaming. The print process needed for these types is important also, as they are generally viewed as a lower quality graphic than what is found on standard pop-ups. This may not be the case, depending on the vendor. Prices for these pre-attached models with fabric faces run $1695-$4995, depending on the vendor and print process. E. 3-D Style Pop-up - These are the newest entries to the pop-up market. They essentially are the fabric style pre-attached graphic pop-up only with a twist. They have the graphics attached to the framework to give a three dimensional effect, also incorporating different frame shapes, from square to round to trapezoidal. The graphics are already on the frame, making set up of these types very easy. The graphics are also easily removable/ replaceable with costs being low. They run from $995-$8995 depending on the shapes, numbers of graphics and vendors print process used. _____________________________ Copyright information....
